Coltrane Church

Truly an honor to lead, edit, and publish A Love Supreme: 50 Years of the Coltrane Church (in collaboration with incredible designer Laurence Jaccottet and our dedicated team) celebrating the legendary Coltrane Church. This limited edition book commemorates the legacy and history of a global spiritual community within San Francisco and beyond.

Our painstakingly created clothbound hardcover celebrating the Church’s 50th anniversary features never-seen-before archival imagery, paintings, and stories from key members of their community.

Their story as an African Orthodox Church that made John Coltrane their patron saint sounds curious enough, but Coltrane is just the hook, not the story.

This is a Bay Area institution with deep activist roots (one of the founders was a student of Dr. Huey P. Newton, co-founder of the Black Panthers) and long-standing community programs. They've given marginalized people a voice. They've stood up to developers in SF who were forcing people out of their homes. And even now, they stand as a symbol of what San Francisco was—and still can—be.

Thanks to generous support from Eaton Workshop, 100% of the sales went directly to the Coltrane Church. This translated to over $20,000 to fund ongoing efforts to serve their community.

Despite zero press push, we were amazed that our book found its way into the right hands—including those of writer Hua Hsu, who was inspired to pen a piece in the New Yorker featuring quotes and images lifted from the book.

It is an honor to also have our work acquired into the collections of the San Francisco Public Library and UC Santa Barbara library. A Love Supreme!
